Umm Mohammed

When Umm Mohammed retired from her job as a teacher to focus a full time on her sewing hobby, no one would have thought that this would be the start of a business with global distribution. Umm Mohammed lives with her husband, Abu Mohammed, her sister and her five children in a two room apartment in Amman. Her husband owned a restaurant, but the business was poor and had resulted in growing debts. The family’s daily expenses were limited to JD10.

In 1999, Umm Mohammed took a JD 250 loan from Tamweelcom to buy some materials,  she and her husband started to produce slippers, cushions and dresses in their home. Little by little the business started to grow, but it was not until her participation in Tamweelcom-Souk Ayyadi at Jebal al-Hussein and the First Bazaar Ayyadi in Zarqa and the second one in Amman at Al-Hussein park, that the business started to flourish. “ We face serious problems when marketing our products, however Souk Ayyadi gave us an opprortunity to deal with potential customers and upgraded our selling techniques , so that we got improved and developed in all marketing fields” Umm Mohammad said. Both Souk  Ayyadi and Bazaars enlarged our clients base and reflected a significant increase in demands Um Mohammed added.

Currently, Umm Mohammed and her husband produce 400 pairs of slippers monthly.

Every year Umm Mohammed seeks to develop and improve the collection. It has resulted in a wide range of products, combining traditional techniques of handicraft with modern demands. After her huge success in the Jordanian market, she expanded outside the Kingdom’s borders and now has clients in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and the United States.

The business has enabled the family to move from their small apartment to a house. Abu Mohammed has repaid the debt and allow double the amount for daily expenses in his restaurant. As a Palestinian refugees without Jordanian, nor Palestinian passports, the family was close to facing major difficulties when one of their sons had a medical complication in his leg. They fortunately got adequate health care at a private clinic, which they could afford thanks to their sprawling business and to the hand which took care of them “Tamweelcom”.

Umm Mohammed and Abu Mohammed have created not only a source of income for  themselves, but also for the group of women who work for them. The cooperation with Tamweelcom has also profited one of their daughters, who has received an educational grant enabling her to reach her high academic potential. Umm Mohammed is hopeful towards the future, currently, she is arranging for her and her husband’s products to be sold over the internet.
